Intuitive and curious. When I began “cooking” I was small and what my family considered “obstinate”. Obstinately, I consider myself rather, “having been curious”. I did not use recipes, preferring to figure it out by myself. Consequently, most of my “experimentation” happened during the omnipresent 4 hours of an 18 hole golf game when the family was not around to complain. Curiosity led both to intuition..and recipes. Curiosity leads to needing. A need for knowledge and the why behind the need. There is a reason behind those measures in baking and a marinade. There is a reason why baking is seemingly happenstance in humid weather. “Reason” can be both ubiquitous and circumstantial. I was looked at with curiosity by Chefs when I was learning. I learned myself later that a Chef or the all-important home cook maintained their curiosity lifelong and recognized that intuitive nature in other people. Watch a person cook with interest. Watch intuition marry with the learning of a lifetime. Watch curiosity and intuition both marry and culminate with what they may think is their simple preparation of a family meal. If you could watch in real-time all of the instances it took to make that very real complexity happen, you might be stunned.
